Map edit request

Hi Cephas - on your map File:Arenaria interpres map.svg, could you make the wintering areas in western Europe more obvious, please (similar to the east coast on North America)? It is barely visible except at high resolutions. Maybe a different colour overall, less close to the sea colour, might be better too. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:19, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Excellent, thanks! I was also thinking, the widths of the colours are very unequal in some places? In some areas (e.g. eastern USA) it is very thick, in others (e.g. NW Europe, W Mexico) it is very narrow. Would it be easy to make them more equal? - MPF (talk) 23:02, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks again! Unfortunately, that is just bad drawing on the source map (I took a look at it); the same artefact is not shown in other published distribution maps. It is of course a strictly coastal species outside of the breeding season, which leaves the problem of illustrating a strip which is thousands of km long, but no more than a few tens of metres (to at most, perhaps 1 km) wide, on a map where that width is invisible at the scales used. One has to make an accomodation for that, and using a line of equal width on all coasts is the best option. - MPF (talk) 23:30, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

Another map edit, please: File:Cistothorus platensis map.svg, where the problem is that this has been split into two species (IOC; scroll ⅓ way down page). The bulk of this map, the migratory population (orange, yellow, blue) in USA and northeast Mexico is now Cistothorus stellaris, while the resident populations (purple) in southern Mexico and Central America remain in C. platensis, which also occurs widely in South America. My suggestion therefore would be to remove the purple areas from this map, and rename it File:Cistothorus stellaris map.svg; and then create a new map for C. platensis based on a South America base map. Hi, I was looking at your range maps, and they are very good! I noticed that most bird pages do not have range maps so I'm thinking of making some maps myself, but I like your style the best. I can find the source of the data at the IUCN pages, but I don't know how you transferred them to the maps available on wikicommons. Another map update, please!

Hi Cephas - with the new split (effective today) of Numenius hudsonicus from Numenius phaeopus, the map File:Numenius phaeopus map.svg needs dividing into two maps, please: an edited File:Numenius phaeopus map.svg (Old World including Iceland & eastern Greenland; remove the Americas), and a new map File:Numenius hudsonicus map.svg (Americas only). Thanks, though should have just uploaded the new version on top of the old one (or rename the old one something like File:Numenius hudsonicus and Numenius phaeopus map.svg to reflect its updated circumscription); now all uses of the old out-of-date map will need to be changed (tedious, as it is on so many pages!). Can you also add the border of South Sudan in File:Tragelaphus buxtoni map.svg (the border is still pale) and File:Tragelaphus angasii distribution.svg (where it is missing)? That is all. Please don't think I am making a fuss. I am adding the borders of South Sudan in current PNG maps where it is missing. Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself and also sophisticated PNG maps like orthographical maps and maps with topographical features, that is why I asked you.

Bonjour, Je voudrais vous signaler que depuis neuf ans personne n'a remarqué que votre dessin de l'Équateur contient une erreur grossière : L'archipel des Galapagos, tel que vous l'avez représenté, est à l'envers, c'est-à-dire... la tête en bas ! Par ailleurs, l'image me semble disproportionnée du fait d'avoir voulu situer l'Équateur par rapport à l'Amérique du Sud. Another map edit, please!

Hi Cephas - in File:Spatula discors map.svg, could you change the area of purple on the east coast of Brazil to blue, please? They only winter there, not resident. Also, the area of orange on the west coast of North America should be yellow (migration only, not breeding), and the colour removed from Seward Peninsila (Alaska), where they do not occur regularly. And another, please :-) File:Nycticorax nycticorax map.svg has a couple of errors: does not occur in Hokkaido (northern Japan), so should be grey not blue; or the northern part of Michigan (between Great Lakes), should be grey not green. Also breeding is more extensive in Europe now (European Breeding Bird Atlas 2, 2021), should be yellow across all of France except close to N coast, all of the Netherlands, and throughout the lower altitude areas of eastern Europe north to 50°N (south of Czech Republic-Poland border, and all of Ukraine except northernmost parts; except for the Carpathian, Balkan, and other mountains). @Hector Bottai: The work is motivating. Thanks for the recognition. You will find that consistency only partially at Tyrannidae, Pipridae and Cotingidae, still a lot of work to do at the species page level. I need to go back there, but currently working on multicoloured family Thraupidae (>400 species, 112 genera), around 40% progress and the family page is still a mess. I am remembering now some very small caribbean families recently split, some monotypic, for you to consider also: es:Calyptophylidae, es:Phaenicophilidae, es:Nesospingidae, es:Spindalidae, es:Zeledoniidae, es:Teretistridae. Question about Phytotoma rara map

Hi, Cephas. I saw that you uploaded a distribution map of Phytotoma rara. I have a question, maybe you could know the answer. I live in Chiloe Archipelago, where "Year-round" and "Breeding" territories merge (I heared one in my backyard today). Does the source say anything about that zone? Hello @Lin linao: , The source says the species is present year-round on Chiloe Island. The thing is, often, the scale at which my maps are drawn doesn't provide very much precisions on exact distribution: it is more a general idea about where a particular species is located in the world. In this particular case, Chiloe Island doesn't even appear on the blank map I'm using. In addition, I can say that even when the "precision" is available on the map and on the source, the source(s) is (are) not always right. I can say this based on species in my own region that I know well, and I'm sure precisions could be asked for many of the maps that I draw. --Cephas (talk) 11:54, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello friend, one more family completed. I did a full review and update of es:Vireonidae and found a few holes on maps that you may want to fix:

• es:Vireo olivaceus, as all the mayor classifications already splitted es:Vireo chivi, there is no sense in showing the map for the old full distribution. The map at IUCN is not that accurate, I suggest eBird.

@Hector Bottai: The easiest way to work for me is to draw the map once it is available in IUCN hence, to have a list of the reviewed species that I can update in right time would be a good strategy. Unfortunatelly IUCN sometimes takes a different approach or delays long time in implementing changes. Taxonomy has been very dynamic and splits are happening more and more, and most of the wikis are well behind in editing. After the acquisition of Birds of the World Alive by eBird/Clements, this has become the main and reliable source of changes. Spanish wiki follows Clements and English follows IOC, those two classifications are quite aligned in most of the cases. What I can do is informing you case by case, the potential source of map information, and of course, will be your decision and availability. Anyway thanks a lot for your marvelous work. Clements/eBird 2021 neotropical changes one shot

As you asked, joined almost all in one shot. Here we go, I will try my best.
1. es:Pyriglena leuconota split into es:Pyriglena maura (map ok!) and es:Pyriglena similis (map ok!). Everythig west at this map have to be removed (it is maura now).
2. es:Scytalopus androstictus (map ok!) split from es:Scytalopus opacus. The southern smallest range at this map have to be removed.
3. es:Scytalopus intermedius (map ok!) split from es:Scytalopus latrans. The southern smallest range at this map have to be removed.
4. es:Sclerurus obscurior split from es:Sclerurus mexicanus. Everything from México to easternmost Panamá of this map is mexicanus; everything South America, including some overlap in easternmost Panamá is obscurior.
5. es:Hylexetastes uniformis split from es:Hylexetastes perrotii. On this map everyting north of the Amazon river is perrotii, everyting south is uniformis.
6. es:Basileuterus delattrii split from es:Basileuterus rufifrons. on [this map p. 43] everyting north not including yellow is rufifrons, everything south including yellow is delattrii.
7. es:Polioptila bilineata split from es:Polioptila plumbea. This is the most difficult to explain because I have no map reference, only written ranges [BOW]. On this map, everything Central America, Pacific coast of Sout America, including the central leg of Colombian Andes and a small part of Carribbean coast is bilineata; all the rest of South America (including the third leg of the Colombian Andes) is plumbea.
8. es:Pyrocephalus nanus recognized split of es:Pyrocephalus rubinus; extinct es:Pyrocephalus dubius not recognized, but both have maps at IUCN, and the existent maps at pages are not good. Up to you.
9 es:Polioptila albiventris split from es:Polioptila albiloris. The small range at the coast of Yucatan peninsula on this map is albiventris.

Additionally, and this is not part of the list, I created a page for es:Polioptila maior treated as species by Birdlife but not by others. map here.

Borders on your maps

Hi! I really like your maps and noticed something interesting about them that I wanted to ask about.
On your maps, e.g. Cyornis ruckii map.svg, you make the political boundary cut off at the ocean, instead of it wrapping back round on the coastline. How do you do this? Do you use a special data set? I use ArcGIS but I am also happy to know how to do this in QGIS.

Map clarity

Hi Cephas - on File:Chlidonias niger map.svg the winter distribution is barely visible (blue presence on blue sea!) Could you make it more conspicuous, please - thicker blue wintering, and make the sea a much paler blue? Also, it should be shown as present on migration both inland in western Europe (west of the breeding range, and north to England - File:Chlidonias niger, Big Waters, Northumberland 1.jpg ;-)), and offshore likewise on Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts (south from southern Scandinavia and England) to connect to the wintering areas in Africa. Distribution map for Sabine's gull

Hi, I've noticed that your distribution map for Sabine's gull (Xema_sabini) doesn't include any breeding areas in Canada. You based your map File:Xema_sabini_map.svg on the IUCN map here: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/22694479/157413905 which also doesn't show any Canadian breeding areas. I think this is an error on the part of the IUCN (Birdlife International)

The IUCN text has "This species breeds in the Arctic and has a circumpolar distribution through northernmost North America and Eurasia." which suggests that birds breed in North America.

Other sources all show birds breeding in Canada.

A population in NE Brazil is only mentioned by the IUCN - who cite: Lees, A.; Thompson, I.; Moura, N. (2014). "Salgado Paraense: an inventory of a forgotten coastal Amazonian avifauna". In taxonomy used by IUCN this species lives also on South Sandwich Islands, few islands in southern Indian Ocean and few islands south of New Zealand (Macquarie Island, Bishop and Clerk Islets). They all are small and would be barely visible on a map but maybe use small cirles to indicate this bird lives there? Different zooming of the map (just showing southern oceans) would help also. However in taxonomy by IOC and Birds of the World most subspecies are split (only subspecies from South America and Falkland Islands remain) and it would require creating another map. Hi! Could you please make a 2nd map for this species? The one you created today is based on IUCN taxonomy (it includes 1 subspecies only) while IOC and Birds of the World recognize 3 subspecies - they lump Diopsittaca nobilis with Diopsittaca cumanensis (2 subspecies). Family Paserellidae

Range of the blue-headed parrot

I've modified the range map File:Pionus menstruus map.svg for the blue-headed parrot to include the range of the subspecies Pionus menstruous reichenowi as per the IOC. Birdlife International treats this subspecies as a full species, the blue-breasted parrot, and has a separate range map. See here. I've retained the same file name and I now realise that this may be an error. I notice that many other wikis also use this map and I'm not sure that they all use the IOC taxonomy. Should I upload the file with a different name? Feel free to replace my map if you consider it unsatisfactory - I don't use Inkscape very often and each time I have to relearn how to manipulate a map.- Aa77zz (talk) 13:29, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Cephas - File:Nucifraga columbiana map.svg needs a couple of small additions for isolated populations in Mexico not currently shown: one in northern Baja California in the Sierra San Pedro Martír mountains (around 31°N 115.4°W, in a narrow NNW-SSE strip about 70 km long), and one around Cerro Potosí (24.87°N 100.23°W) and nearby summits (north to 25.44°N 100.53°W) in the Sierra Madre Oriental along the Nuevo León - Coahuila border. Hi Cephas - another edit request, please! File:Cygnus columbianus map.svg is missing any indication of migration in Eurasia like it is shown for North America. Could you add some yellow connections between the Arctic Eurasian breeding grounds, and the wintering areas in NW Europe, and SW & E Asia, please? Additional correction: very few now winter in Ireland, only in the southeast (due to short stopping with global warming). Indication of the two subspecies (C. c. bewickii in Eurasia, C. c. columbianus in N America) would also help (no doubt they'll be split some day!). Also, would it be feasible to make the map divide at 30°W, rather than 0°, please? It doesn't look good with the UK wintering population split at each end of the map. Eastern meadowlark range map

Hi, the AOU and the IOC (version 12.2) have split the en:Eastern meadowlark to create an additional species, the en:Chihuahuan meadowlark. I've created a new map for the Eastern meadowlark to reflect this split. To do this I've edited the map that you created File:Sturnella magna map.svg and removed the ranges of the two subspecies (lilianae and auropectoralis) to create a new map File:Sturnella magna map after split.svg. I took the ranges from Fig 1 in doi:10.1093/ornithology/ukab004 (open access).

Hi Cephas - on File:Ardenna gravis map.svg, could you add Tristan da Cunha highlighted as the only significant breeding colony, please? There is also a very small colony on the Falkland Islands, up to you whether you want to add that too. Also, the non-breeding range needs some extension in the northeast Atlantic, to reach the southern fringes of Iceland, the north, west and south coasts of Ireland, and the western fringes of Scotland, Cornwall, Brittany, and Iberia. Hi friend, The only taxonomy to split those two is Birdlife. Current map is splitted H. ferruginea, so we are missing a map for H. bellicosa (good map at IUCN).
